چکیده

A process has been developed for obtaining closed cell metallic foams using a ceramic foam precursor. In the present study, the major constituent of the ceramic foam precursor was iron oxide (Fe2O3), which was mixed with various foaming/setting additives. The mixture set rapidly at room temperature, stabilizing the foam generated by hydrogen release. The oxide foam was then reduced by annealing at 1240◦C in a non-flammable hydrogen/inert gas mixture to obtain a metallic foam with a relative density of 0.23 ± 0.017, and an average cell diameter of 1.32 ± 0.32 mm. The iron foams were tested in compression and yielded an average compressive strength of 29 ± 7 MPa. The compressive stress-strain curves obtained were typical of cellular metals. The normalized strengths of the metal foams obtained in the present study compare favorably with those of steel foams produced by other techniques. C © 2005 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

High Porosity Metallic Glass Foam: A Powder Metallurgy Route

A powder metallurgy route to the fabrication of metallic glass foam is introduced. The method involves consolidating metallic glass powder blended with blowing agent particulates to produce expandable precursors, capable of yielding foams with porosities as high as 86%. The foams are found to inherit the strength of the parent metallic glass, and to be able to deform heavily toward full densifi...

Amorphous metal foams

As recently demonstrated, amorphous metal foams are highly ductile in compression, and thus offer attractive compromises in mechanical and physical properties between crystalline metallic and ceramic foams. Challenges associated with fabrication of amorphous metal foams are critically assessed in the context of current and future processing methods, and conclusions are drawn regarding the prope...

Stochastic metallic-glass cellular structures exhibiting benchmark strength.

By identifying the key characteristic "structural scales" that dictate the resistance of a porous metallic glass against buckling and fracture, stochastic highly porous metallic-glass structures are designed capable of yielding plastically and inheriting the high plastic yield strength of the amorphous metal. The strengths attainable by the present foams appear to equal or exceed those by highl...

Study of Metallic-ceramic Composite Foams with Application of the Computer Tomograph

K. Gawdzińska, Maritive University of Szczecin, Szczecin, Poland The paper presents the study of the metallic-ceramic composite foams (the AlSi9 matrix, the SiC reinforcement) with application of the computer microtomograph. The morphology of these materials was also described in the paper, as well as generation of the three-dimensional models of the entire samples of foam. Additionally, quanti...

بررسی عوامل حباب‌زای TiH2و CaCO3 بر ساختار وخواص کامپوزیت فومی Al-7%Si-3%SiC

In this paper, the effect of TiH2 and CaCO3 blowing agents was investigated on the structure and energy absorption of Al-7%Si-3%SiC composite metal foam by powder compact route. Composition of the foam was prepared from a mixture of Al, SiC and Si powders. Then, precursors were consolidated in H13 die mould by cold and uni-axial pressing at 110 MPa and at room temperature. The pressed precursor...
